Peppermill in Corte Madera
Does anyone remember the Peppermill in Corte Madera, where Max's is today? I spent many an evening sitting around the fire pit in the cocktail lounge. It was so dark and romantic. I remember the waitresses were all very attractive and wore sexy low-cut dresses with the slits up to the thigh. They chang... |

Lots of Gas Stations (Service Stations)
I once counted 28 stations in Mill Valley alone. There are about 6-8 now. What a huge difference I'll bet 100 have closed in the county. And is there a thread on bars ? Every town had a dozen. My Dad worked late a lot at The Office in Mill Valley, what a great name. |

Strawberry Village late 60's, early 70's
Does anyone remember the original shops at the Strawberry Village in Mill Valley? Since my family owned the Hi-Ho Motel across the freeway, that was the most convenient place for all our shopping needs. And they did have everything you needed. I can't remember the name of the shop that was kind of like... |

Bon Air
There's so much to say about this mid-century classic strip mall. From the Bon Air sign itself, to the Petrini's sign, to the the Greenbrae Pharmacy. I worked at the Greenbrae Pharmacy from about 1983-1986, during summers and Christmas breaks. I wanted to work there so badly; I perceived it as a "... |

Hey There, CMM
I hope I don't flagged down for mis-use of the forum, but I just noticed something particular to one poster. I read a post that said "my parents used to run the Hi-Ho Motel", and read the poster's handle, CMM. Something clicked. Are you Candy Mandell? If you are, did you used to date a bagpipe playing gu... |

Peter Tork of The Monkees and Fondue
I don't know if this rumor is true but I once heard that Peter Tork of television's "The Monkees" owned a fondue restaurant in Marin during the 70s. True? -- Edited by JasonLewis at 20:35, 2007-02-14 |

Bicentennial
What things do you remember happening in Marin for the bicentennial? What I remember is that Corte Madera and Larkspur had someone paint all the fire hydrants along Magnolia with a revolutionary hero theme. They all looked like Little People toys! Also, the stop sign that is on top of a concrete mou... |

The Tree Toads
I had dinner with my brothers and sister last night. They told some stories from the 1930s and 1940s. One story was about these two fellows who lived in the burned out Redwoods near our house on the hill in Corte Madera. These two guys would buy a gallon of wine downtown and it would take them a few hours to w... |

"The Big E" (the Emporium) - Northgate Mall Opens 1964
How about the opening of Northgate Mall in 1964 when it had really good stores and had an open ceiling? It was a pretty cool place. The Emporium (now Macy's - quite a disappointment), Roos Brothers, Modern Eve....I can't remember them all but it was such a great Mall back then. Far from it now. Remember a... |

Marin Memories
You know what I totally remember? The liquor store in Petrini's, where they had this big illuminated plastic penguin on a high corner shelf. Every time we went to Petrini's when I was little, I would sneak into the liquor section to see the penguin. Except he wasn't a penguin. He was a promo thingy for Ol... |

SKIDS
Who remembers during the early '80's when someone was graffitti'ing all the yellow traffice signs with the mysterious word "skids", with two squiggly lines underneath? It was a big mystery at the time. no one knew what it was for or what it meant, and it showed up all over the county. |

The Courthouse Creamery
We moved to San Rafael in 1963--I was 8. The Courthouse hadn't burned down yet, the Courthouse Creamery restaurant was across the street. There was a donut maker in the window--you could watch the uncooked donuts drop into the hot oil, then the machine would flip them onto a rack when they were done. Wh... |
