Somewhere in my house I have the real estate brochure from when Forbes was selling his Island around the late '80's early '90's. It is in color and shows all the rooms and decor. If I find it, would anybody be interested in seeing it? It was definitely Captain Nemoesque in its interior design.
yeah it is by pier 39 behind a sea wall. You take a little boat over to it, but it is just a 2 minute ride since it is on the far side of the slips for that section. The food was highly overpriced for what you got. I spent 24 bucks just for a plate of veggies. The atmosphere is nice though and it is unique. It is worth going to once with out of town guests.
I dated Forbes Kadoo briefly. Can't remember exactly when but the island was past it's hey day (so was dear Forbes). The island was tied up somewhere in the south bay. If I remember right he was hoping for money help from another or other interested parties in order to get it equipped - regulations wise (wheel chair access, etc.) so that it could be converted into a restaurant. I don't know after that. Did you try googling for info?
Where did Forbes Island end up? A lot of us remember that 'island' that a guy named Forbes built on an old barge & had palm trees & a beach on it, it was anchored out in Richardson Bay for quite some time, I'm guessing in the 1980's. It was covered with rocks which Forbes hand picked out at the old quarry at Mc Nears point, my brother was working there at the time & remembers Forbes scampering around the quarry with a can of marking paint & tagging the boulders he wanted to purchase to 'landscape' the barge. I heard he had an organ inside the hold of the barge which had been made into a living quarters/dining area, ala 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.At some point he turned it into an attraction of sorts, you could reserve a dinner date there & be delivered by boat to the barge, where a candlelight dinner & organ seranade awaited. I seem to remmeber it being moved, maybe to the San Francisco waterfront, or Crockett area, anybody know what happened to it?
