Hey, Meadowsweet Rich:

I just read the whole thread. Lee G. and I lived on Meadow Valley and the house between us (actually a long driveway leading up to the big house on the hill) was where Spencer Dryden lived. We used to baby sit his youngest son.

Do you remember the goose that Mr. Pavey had for a time? He used to chase us kids whenever we'd cut through the farm. And all the chickens in the back.

I got my first kitten from a woman named Diana Cockley who lived in the little adobe in the back.

And there was Adam, who used to juggle apples in the big field in front.

When I was a kid, we were all playing inside the main house one day and swinging on the swing they had indoors. I cut my wrist open and had to get 14 stitches. I still have the scar.

I'm rambling, I know, but it's so good to find this site and others who remember a time that wasn't that long ago but seems today like another world.

I've got to call Lee G. now!

I just found this site and stumbled upon the picture of the ponies. That was Dawn on Dusty and it looks like Lee on my pony, Star.

There were a few of us around the Meadowsweet/Meadow Valley area that kept ponies. I had two, Star and Angel and they were kept in the back pasture at Mr. Pavey's farm. Lee G. lived right next door to me and Dawn lived up the street.

We rode them in the 4th of July parade for a few years. I've got pictures around here somewhere.

Seeing that photo just brought back so many memories. I just stumbled on this site by accident today and I'm so glad I had.

Thank you, whoever started this!

Hi Lee, yeah I remember Lucky, he was a white German Shepard that lived at the corner of Fawn & Meadow Valley & used to chase motorcycles, he'd here you coming & position himself near the driveway & charge you as you passed by, I always put my leg up as high as possible on the tank & sped up.I think Scooter & Maco were both dogs owned by the Murata's, smaller & non-threatening. Brockmann's lived in the house with the red Spanish tile roof, up the steep driveway next to Bob's farm.

I am not too sure did he live in the house at the end of fawn lane the one with the driveway up to the house. Or was it the first house when you made the turn down the hill on Meadow Valley. I remember sitting playing in the so called grass in the creek watching all the guys ride there bikes..
Rich: Do you remember Lucky? Scooter? Maco? Or anything about a Kangaroo?

Sorry Jason I don't have any pictures of me and Red doing my route. I thought the IJ may have had one but I havn't checked with them. This was a long time ago, probably '61 or '62. The IJ was still in San Rafael, I don't now if they would have keep those things that long , sorry.

Steve, I knew Randy, he was my neighbor, I was buddies with George also. I remember their house being built in the 1960's, we all loved motorcycle riding, I bought my first motorcycle from George, actually it was a bike with a blown motor, a Hodaka 100, that I bought a brand new engine for & put together. Randy was a great motorcyclist who could pull wheelies the length of Fawn Lane on his Yamaha trail bike. Sad that he died so young.

I'm not sure what years this all took place.

I did have a friend in that area, the way too short lived Randy Brockman.

Did any one know him ?

(his mom had Brockman Real Estate, Tiburon Blvd/Redwood Hwy)

Yes I am!
That was my friend Dawn on the Light brown pony holding the paper up, I am on the Black pony holding a group of papers. As for houses on that route I honestly can not remember. I remember the papers would arrive at the Corte Madera library around 3:00, it would take about an hour to fold and pack them. 45 min. if we were running late. I think we would finish by about 6:30.
Thank you so much, I have forgotten about that picture, when It came out we had them around the house. Now I don't think anyone in my family has a copy.
Thanks for the Memories and the picture.

Lee,

You're actually one of the girls in the picture?!? How cool!!!! Do you remember how many homes were on your route and how long it took you?

And, Carp, you did the same thing in Santa Venetia? Do you or your family have any pictures of you on the horse from those days?

Jason

Thanks for letting me relive the memorys of Meadow Valley rd. That was a fun time..
As for Spencer, God rest his soul. I miss him I allways think about him. I lived in the house below his house for as long as he lived there. And yes It was the O'Neils.

Well I guess I wasn't the only one to deliver the I.J. from horseback. I used to ride Big Red my arabian that was 18 hands high to deliver my papers. Always bareback and rarley would I get off, I had a hard time getting back on, I had to find a stump or porch to be able to get back on. My dashound named Tiny would follow use on the route in Santa Venetia and on many occacions would take on a big German Sheperd that would ultimitly kick his butt, Tiny would always go after the biggest dog he could find. No leash laws back then. Riding Red on my route was quite fun and I got many looks and a couple good tips at collecting time. I think my route manager who dropped off my papers, Willie Wong, may have taken a picture for the IJ to put in the paper. I don't remember if they put it in the paper or not? Those were the days!

Bob's pool was used as a pool at one time, back in the early 60's we swam there, as far as Bob's roof & goats , I was never up there, I meant the goats were up there often, they used to jump from a derelict old Hilman car that was parked by the garage to get up there, the Murata's still own their property & I think the mom & 1 of the girls live there still. We are getting ready to sell our family home since both parents are gone now, my brother was looking through a box of old papers & came across a petition that most neighbors signed in the 1970's to block annexation to the city of Corte Madera, Spencer Dreyden had signed it, I forgot that he lived in our area then, he was up the hill at the old O'Neill place, Dreyden was the drummer for Jefferson Airplane. Nice seeing another poster from Meadowsweet area here, have a good day.

I was just going to ask you if you delivered to my house I grew up on Meadow Valley. Oh Bob Pavey, He still lives there. He is the only one I think unless the Meradas still live ther. Too Funny
My best friend just moved from Meadow Valley. She said that BoB P was still the same he would have on his thong in the summer and his grungie old jeans in the winter. If you were on the roof than you remember the Pool. I dont think he ever used it as a pool.. hahaha
have a good day.

Yes Bob Pavey's farm was great thing to have in the neighborhood, he had goats that roamed the pastures, & every so often 1 would hop on top of a car & jump onto the roof of the big house and walk around, pretty funny until the one goat fell off & broke it's fool neck. I think I probably delivered to your house on my route, I had Meadow Valley, Fawn Lane, all 3 apartment complexes, and of course Pepperwood, where I grew up.

Yes Rich You are correct on both It was the IJ and I do not think that old tree is there anymore. It was right by the house that had the big pool that was covered in by the Burnt red fence. There was a buzzer under the mail box that we had to ring when the paper was delivered. We delivered to all the little streets that were off of meadow sweet. I am trying to rememner the names and I can't. But we went up it in the hills. I am having all kinds of flash backs right now. The Cancillas, the Peacocks, Mr. Peaveys farm with the mean fighting roster. Oh my gosh Every one had dogs back then not one of them tied up. I cant get over how much things have changed.
Thank you for replying to my little ditty.

I knew I recognized that oak tree, such a beautiful old oak, although last time I drove by there it looked stressed, hope it's not afflicted with sudden oak death syndrome. What paper were you delivering? My IJ route included those apartments right across the road from where the pic was taken, although I didn't deliver Meadowsweet Drive.

Ponies delivering papers on meadowsweet. Holly Cow I forgot about that time in my life. That was Dawn and I. The ponies names were Dusty and Apollo. WOW I have not seen that picture for a long time. Memories :)
We would fold papers in front of the library with the other paper carriers and when they were finished they would ride off on there bikes we would ride off on the ponies.
I am so taken back by the picture, that I am not sure what to write. I will have to put some thinking in to this.
