I lived in Fairfax at the time and was trying to get home. Was stopped at the San Anselmo hub and turned back. One thing the guy that was turning people back I never heard about and never forgot was he said "They are draining Kent lake". I have always thought that contributed something but you never heard anything.
Thanks so much for the interesting memory, Paul. If you (or anyone else) have photos from the '82 flood from your town please feel free to email them in or contact me and I'll help you get them on the site.
I was working that day in January of 1982 for the city of Novato, I remember looking at all the water and driving my sign truck through the streets filled 3 feet high with water and a feeling of helplessness because there was not a thing I could do to stop it at the time during the day. The radios were a buzz because we shared the same frequency as NSD. High water alarms from lift stations and barminuter filters we a serious problem, and no doubt heap plenty of raw sewage was discharged. They asked us to stay and work overtime and I agreed. We got some beer and roasted some J's and went out into the city with trucks and did a whole lot of moving stuff out of the roadways. The storm had calmed down so about midnight they suggested that I sleep in the office on the couch so I could work for them tommorrow, the officials also told me there was no way I could make back to my house up in Mill Valley. I opted out of staying up in Novato and figured where I lived was more important. They told me, but you won't come back in the morning. They were right, after working 18 hours straight you best be believing I won't come back. I drove through the county on 101 and exited at Lincoln Ave. because the freeway was closed. I drove over Wolf grade and encountered 3 feet of water in Larkspur at Bon Air Dr. and Magnolia ( that is where I fried the wheel bearings in my personal truck ). There were cars parked all around the churches where people were staying overnight. I made it through Larkspur and Corte Madera no problem and drove over the old grade to Mill Valley, just before the top of the grade I had to stop and make a very important decision because half of the road had slid down the hill, it was like Russian roulette, I went for it and made it but down at Overhill and Camino Alto was a police officer, he stopped me and asked me where did I just come from ? I told him and he said the road completely slid out a few minutes ago, he could not believe I made it through, I guess I was just under the wire. ( Incidently the road was completely closed for nine months after that for repair ). Then I went through Mill Valley with no problem, but on my way home a section of Monte Vista was also slid out, leaving me barely enough room to get by, so I had to make another split decision and went for it, the road completely slid out later and was also closed for about a year for repairs. I finally arrived at my house at 2:30 am and promptly fell fast to sleep and called in flooded to Novato and slept in late the next day. Even though I didn't go through San Anselmo, I think the flood hit everywhere hard, it was not limited to San Anselmo.
