In the mid 60's the "old" Short School was still standing. It was a wooden building that looked as if it was built in the late 1800's with a bell tower. Was really quite charming as I remember. It suffered the same fate as the beautiful stone church on 5th & E in San Rafael. Both victims of new earthquake standards.

Way out at the end of Vendola. Does anyone remember when it was a school? I only knew it in the early 80s as an artist community--it was supposed to be art studios, but several of them (and their families) actually lived there--the classrooms were certainly big enough, and the blackberry pickin' was good in the summer :)

Today's IJ has an about how they're considering turning the space into a park:

It also mentions Short School (Gerstle Park area) which I only remember as a daycare. Anyone go there when it was an elementary school?
