We were busted one night trying to sneak into that place. There were 3 of us in the trunk and 1 in the car. If that wasn't obvious enough, the driver didn't want to leave the spare tire down the road, so we put it in the backseat and threw some coats over it. I knew there was a problem when the engine shut off and we were still at the ticket booth.
There used to be a couch on the hill just behind the drive in. We used to drink beers, etc. and watch the flicks for free.
We also used to hang out across the street from the one in San Rafeal where Marin Square is now and do the same thing.
In high school we used to pack into the trunk of my buddy's Monte Carlo and sneak into the SonoMarin drive in to check out the '70's porn. He was the only one with a fake ID so there was usually like three of us packed in there.
You mean the one on Smith Ranch Road Paul? That's where my mom took our station wagon packed with kids to see The Beatles film 'Help!', an added attraction that night was a good size wildland fire on San Pedro Ridge to the south that lit the night sky.
Was there or was there not another Marin drive-in theater off 101 between what is now Terra Linda and Marinwood, on the east side of the road? Or has my memory totally gone bonkers?
Yeah I remember that place, I think the County bought it for a flood plane, overflow for San Antonio Creek, some guys I know went there & said a Sonoma County Sheriff's car was cruising around with no headlights on trying to be stealthy and the guy hit one of those poles that had the car speakers hanging on them, they said a lot of people honked their horns in laughter, Barney Fife lives !
Who remembers a drive-in movie right off Highway 101 at the Marin/Sonoma county line in the70s? In its final years it switched to showing X-rated movies which could be seen by people driving by on 101. The site is now abandoned, but I believe some of the screens are still standing!
