I believe the big building near the canal on the right side of picture was a Coca Cola bottling plant. Across the street going north I believe was Ames Ford auto dealership. Directly across the highway (from Ames Ford) on the left side, there was a big Bordens milk distributordship building but I'm not sure if it was the rusty buildings or the grey ones farther north...
Hi Steve, I think El Portal was at the summit of highway 101 between San Rafael & Terra Linda, if you were headed south it would be on the right side just before the top of the grade, I think the area is called Puerto Suelo Hill. There is a group of trees there still but not much else.Postcards of the motel show up on ebay once in a while.
I just noticed a bunch of great new shots in old Mill Valley, more Tiburon Tommie's etc.
Can anyone help out on these two ?
Do you recognize anything here besides the canal, Irwin St and 3rd, 4th, 5th St etc ? The old victorian that Royal Thai is in doesn't seem to be there but it's neighbors are. The street at the bottom is an extention of Ritter St (according to my '79 map that shows it as a dead end at the freeway onramp) Note also the whole current n/b 101 is not here. I love the pic, but wish I could identify more/anything. click on to enlarge.
Where was this in San Rafael ? El Portal Motel Shot at 1969-12-31
