Ric..... naw eat and run was across from the old COM gym, and fronted AE Kent school. somebody here posted pics of the old football field flooded, mid 60's, and eat and run was right across the street. skanky place, bigass ruts in the parking lot, honky cheese and zits in the back row, punks parking in rat rods at the fence line. geez. arf arf stack on the funky frysauce.
Charcoal pit was circa 70-7? on up the street in that row of little places just about four doors down from Sir Francis Drake..... on the east side of the street. BEST burgers, Ribeye sandwiches, and applepie, hot,hot, hot. I worked there between classes at COM, weekends too. Jess was a good guy from maybe Florida. R.Williams used to come in there all the time and rap his insecurity to Jesse, who listened to everyone's problems. He was a good guy.
My mom took my brother and I to Jeep's a lot in the late '50's, then down to get ice cream by the fire station , Herbert's Sherbert if I remember right. It stood empty for years and years and just a few years ago the property was developed and it's gone (Jeeps). Lemo, you mean the old Eat and Run ? Secret sauce with those fries ?
jeeps was great. great great greeaaaaaaaate Shakes were the best. My dad and I would go there all the time. anyone remember Jesse Coleman's Charcoal Pit across from COM. Better than Zack Burgers in the Seventies, super hot apple pie. All fresh. I worked there yum
Jeep's topped the places to go for Burgers in the 1960s. They made the Zips, A&W and Eat & Run hamburger places all take a back seat. The hamburgers were outrageously priced -- was it 30 or 35 cents? But the sauce (Thousand Island) was hard to beat. And then there were the fries -- McDonalds should take a few lessons on how to cook fries like these. So was this a dream, or were my trips to Jeep's the Best of Marin??? While I haven't been back to San Anselmo in over a decade I still would drive by Jeep's and remember.
Hey don't forget the cute girls from Marin Catholic in our pleated blue plaid skirts and blue blazers. I was one of them and I used to get an extra thick chocolate shake on the way home from school. On Fridays we got Tuna Burgers. Jeeps was great and the owners were so good to us kids. I married a much older M.C. man - six years my senior!
There was nothing as good as a Jeep Special with the special sauce with fries and a shake. We used to take the G.T.O down south to the race track ...fast ...and alot of Good Times
Jeep's Drive-in was owned by the Dillon family. And Mrs. Dillon was a member of the Cheda family. Their son Pinky was a close friend of mine even though he was 3 years older. He had a fast! yellow GTO. One time we went the whole length of Center Blvd. without stopping at any stop signs. I think we were going about 90 mph or more. I was 14. I loved it. Pinky was fun and very nice. He got killed in Vietnam. I think it was 1967 or '68. That was so sad. So serious. The Dillon's were just devastated.
In addition to the shakes and fries, a major attraction at Jeep's for us male teenagers were the girls from Katharine Branson's School in their cute plaid skirts. Uh oh...I married one of them!! Thanks for all the additional details...
Jeep's, owned by the Dillon's. I went to school down the street at St. Anselms. Their son "Pinky" was in my class. I remember asking him..."so if I understand this right...you can have anything you want when you leave after school?" The drive in was named after their oldest son Tom AKA "Jeep". Mrs Dillion handled the counter order and she could could have bad days, she did not like the students from Marin Catholic, she favored Drake. Mr Dillon was a gem.
Jeep's was located just a few blocks from our house, and we watched it being built with great anticipation. Hands-down the best French Fries! A husband and wife owned and operated it - she was quite plump and he was thin. It was located on an "L" shaped lot fronting on San Anselmo Avenue. In those days Safeway (I think) was next door. Today the grocery store is the Post Office and Mae Lee's Restaurant. Jeep's was torn-down and the property entirely redeveloped over the past two years.
Jeep's was a little off San Anselmo Avenue, and the had an amazing array of flavored shakes. Anyone have a picture of it? We hung out there late '60s-early '70s.
