the Book and News was there forever. the "Candy Jar" either took it over or moved in next door after relocating from "B" St. The Candy Jar used to be right next door to Garotti's ?? Market. It had great peanut brittle which used to spin around under a heat lamp while in the B St location.
Oh yeah! And remember the old San Rafael Book and News... crammed with books and not much are to move around in - I always wondered once I was in there how long it would take to move through the aisles and actually get out.
The Courthouse Creamery was a place to meet with your friends and have a coke, in the late 50's. We would usually take the greyhound bus. We had a great time, there was a music store near by.
We moved to San Rafael in 1964 when I was 6 and I remember the COurthouse Creamery. We would be treated to a wonderful lunch there on special occasions and after church at St. Raphaels.
We moved to San Rafael in 1963--I was 8. The Courthouse hadn't burned down yet, the Courthouse Creamery restaurant was across the street. There was a donut maker in the window--you could watch the uncooked donuts drop into the hot oil, then the machine would flip them onto a rack when they were done. When the Creamery closed, alot of items were available to the public for sale. I still have the dishes I bought.
